In Mathare, a slum in Nairobi, Kenya, soccer is the life force that brings the community together. Teenage girls rush their afternoon chores for an hour of play time on rocks and dirt. One soccer field has arisen next to an area called, "The Fields," which residents use in absence of proper toilet facilities. A goalpost may be a pile of rocks and soccer cleats are passed down through generations. Older boys and men harbor hopes that, like a few Mathare men before them, the game will take them out of the slums. Even those that don't play make their way to the fields during the day to meet friends and discuss the various matches. |
